Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
