Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
